West Pharmaceutical Services Q3 2026: adjusted EPS up 36% to $2.66 on premium-component boom; guidance raised
Q3 · Fiscal year 2026 · Published by Pham Hop
West Pharmaceutical Services' Q3 2026 sales rose 8.7% to $874.5M (11.9% organic) and adjusted EPS 35.7% to $2.66 as premium HVP components grew 19.7%; GAAP EPS of $3.02 (+57%) includes a $0.45 SmartDose sale gain, and full-year guidance was raised to $9.38–$9.48.
At a glance
- Premium components grew 19.7% to $466.7M. These "High-Value Product" (HVP) components, the coated and specially washed stoppers and plungers used for biologic and GLP-1 drugs, are now 53% of company sales and carry most of the profit.
- Adjusted operating margin rose to 25.3% from 21.1%. Operating margin is the share of sales left after running the business, before interest and tax. The gain came from selling more of the expensive HVP parts and from price increases, not from cost cuts.
- Full-year adjusted EPS guidance rose to $9.38–$9.48 from $8.85–$9.05. But Q4 guidance of $820M–$830M in sales is below Q3's $874.5M, with organic growth slowing to 6%–7%.
GAAP EPS +57% includes a $0.45 SmartDose sale gain; adjusted EPS +36%, of which ~$0.08 came from a lower tax rate and ~$0.06 from buybacks
The reported figures look better than the underlying business: one-off gains, a prior-year charge that did not recur, a lower tax rate, buybacks or reserve releases did much of the work.
In this report
West Pharmaceutical Services makes the rubber stoppers, plungers, seals and syringe and injector parts that sit on vials and pens of injectable drugs. In the third quarter of 2026 its sales rose 8.7% to $874.5 million, or 11.9% "organically" (stripping out currency moves and the SmartDose 3.5mL injector business it sold to AbbVie). Diluted EPS jumped 57.3% to $3.02, but $0.45 of that came from the one-off gain on the SmartDose sale. On the company's adjusted measure, which removes that gain and other unusual items, EPS rose 35.7% to $2.66. That figure was far above the $2.14–$2.24 management had guided to three months ago, and full-year guidance went up again.

Share repurchases for the quarter are the release's stated $231 million; nine-month repurchases were $685.3M versus $134.0M a year earlier. Dividends paid in the quarter were $15.5M (nine-month $47.0M minus the 10-Q's six-month $31.5M).
Where the growth came from
Proprietary Products (West's own branded components, 83% of sales) grew 12.6% to $728.8M, or 16.6% organically. The company's sales bridge splits the $91.9M of organic growth into $33.6M from price increases and $58.3M from higher volume and a richer mix. Inside the segment:
- HVP Components rose 19.7% (20.3% organic) to $466.7M. The investor deck says there was strong growth in both GLP-1 and non-GLP-1 products, driven by "volume, price and HVP conversion mix". "Conversion" means customers switching from basic stoppers to premium ones. That is partly driven by Europe's stricter sterile-manufacturing rules (known as Annex 1), and West says it added over 2 points of organic growth.
- HVP Delivery Devices were flat at $99.1M as reported, but rose 26.4% organically. The gap is the SmartDose sale: SmartDose sales were $11.8M this quarter (the last before the AbbVie deal closed) against $29.8M a year ago.
- Standard Products, the basic stoppers and seals, rose only 2.9% to $163.0M.
By customer group, Biologics sales rose 23.2% organically to $379.3M and Pharma 21.4% to $221.3M, while Generics fell 4.5% organically to $128.2M. Asia Pacific grew 41.9% organically. The Americas grew 12.4% and Europe 5.7%.
GLP-1 exposure. The deck puts GLP-1 drugs (the weight-loss and diabetes class) at 21% of Q3 company sales: 12% from elastomer components in Proprietary Products and 9% from West Vantage. That is a large single-drug-class concentration for a company that sells to hundreds of drugmakers.
West Vantage (contract manufacturing of device parts for other companies, 17% of sales) fell 7.3% to $145.7M, or 6.6% organically. The deck attributes the decline to "the planned loss of a CGM customer", meaning a continuous glucose monitor maker, and says results were slightly better than expected. The segment's gross margin fell to 16.5% from 19.3% a year ago. That was still 2.3 points better than Q2, which was hit by the May 2026 cyber incident. Its operating margin was 10.6% against 14.2% a year earlier.
What the headline numbers hide
-
The GAAP EPS jump is partly a one-off. "Other expense (income)" swung to $51.2M of income from $6.9M of expense, mainly because of a $55.7M pre-tax gain on selling the SmartDose assets to AbbVie. After a $22.4M tax charge on that gain and other deal items, the M&A line added $0.45 to EPS. Restructuring ($0.06) and other one-off fees ($0.02, including legal matters and the May cyber incident) pulled the other way. That is why GAAP EPS (+57.3%) runs well ahead of adjusted EPS (+35.7%). The adjusted figure is the better measure of the business this quarter.
-
Most of the adjusted EPS growth is operational, but not all of it. Adjusted operating profit rose 30.2% to $221.5M. Three non-operating items also moved:
- The adjusted tax rate fell to about 17.0% from about 19.8% (our calculation from the reconciliation table), worth roughly $0.08 a share.
- The diluted share count fell 2.5% after the buybacks, worth roughly $0.06.
- Interest income fell to $0.5M from $4.5M because cash went into buybacks, which cost about $0.05.
Net, roughly $0.61 of the $0.70 rise in adjusted EPS came from the operating business.
-
Cash is lagging profit, and receivables keep growing. Operating cash flow was $403.4M for the nine months, down from $503.7M a year earlier, even though net income rose to $506.8M from $361.6M. The release lists a $208.2M outflow from "changes in assets and liabilities", compared with $1.9M a year ago. Accounts receivable (money customers owe West) climbed to $748.2M from $574.4M at year-end (+30%), while nine-month sales rose 14.2%. Receivables grew again in Q3, up from $712.0M at June 30, even though quarterly sales were flat sequentially. The quarter alone looks better: operating cash flow of about $189.5M (the nine-month figure minus the 10-Q's six-month $213.9M) was roughly in line with adjusted net income of $188.8M. The receivables build remains the main thing to explain.
-
Buybacks are draining the cash pile. $685.3M of nine-month repurchases (2.4M shares) took cash down to $464.1M from $791.3M at year-end. Free cash flow (operating cash flow minus capital spending) was $278.4M. On October 26 West signed a new five-year bank credit agreement and repaid its 2019 facility with part of the new borrowing.
-
Guidance went up, and capex went down. Full-year capital spending guidance was cut to $215M–$220M from $250M–$275M. That flatters free cash flow but also means less new capacity spending this year.
On balance the quarter is flattered on a GAAP basis: EPS rose 57% largely because of the $0.45 SmartDose gain. The adjusted result (+36%) is genuinely strong and mostly operational, helped at the margin by a lower tax rate and fewer shares.
Did last time's read hold up?
Our Q2 2026 report said the line to watch in Q3 was whether HVP Components kept growing in the high teens. They did: +19.7% reported and +20.3% organic. That report also expected Q3 sales of $820M–$835M; West delivered $874.5M. Of the two secondary signs, West Vantage's margin recovered partly after the cyber incident (gross margin 16.5%, up from 14.2% in Q2, but still below last year). Receivables did not come back in line with sales: they rose another $36M.
Guidance
| Measure | Previous FY2026 guidance | New FY2026 guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Net sales | $3.345B–$3.380B | $3.41B–$3.42B |
| Organic growth | 10%–11% | 11.3%–11.6% |
| Adjusted diluted EPS | $8.85–$9.05 | $9.38–$9.48 |
| GAAP diluted EPS | — | $9.31–$9.41 |
| Capital spending | $250M–$275M | $215M–$220M |
For Q4 the deck guides to sales of $820M–$830M, organic growth of 6%–7% and adjusted EPS of $2.22–$2.32, with an estimated tax rate of about 18%. The deck also shows two drags on Q4's reported growth: currency (about -0.9 points) and the SmartDose divestiture (about -3.4 points, since roughly $25M of SmartDose sales from Q4 2025 won't recur). The board also raised the quarterly dividend 18% to $0.26 a share.
Takeaway: West's profit is now driven by premium components for biologic and GLP-1 drugs. HVP Components grew 19.7%, pushing the core segment's operating margin to 31.6%, while Generics shrank and West Vantage lost a large customer. The 57% GAAP EPS gain overstates things because of a one-off sale gain, but the 36% adjusted gain is real. The weak spots are cash, with receivables up 30% since December, and a Q4 guide that steps down to 6%–7% organic growth.
Our read
Q3 shows that the premium-mix story held up for another quarter. Gross margin of 39.7% and an adjusted operating margin of 25.3% are both above Q2's 37.7% and 22.6%. Adjusted EPS beat guidance by more than $0.40. But management again guided the next quarter below the one just reported, and three figures will show whether that caution is warranted:
- whether HVP Components keep growing near 20% in Q4;
- whether GLP-1 sales, now 21% of the total, keep growing;
- whether receivables start converting to cash, which they did not do in Q2 or Q3.
Generics (-4.5% organic) and Standard Products (+3.1%) show the rest of the business is barely growing, so a slowdown in biologics or GLP-1 orders would have little to offset it.
