Ametek (AME) earnings preview: what to watch in Q3 2026
Published Oct 28, 2026
Ametek reports Q3 2026 results before the open on Nov 3; after Q2 orders jumped 28% to a record $4.11B backlog against a $2.08–$2.10 adjusted EPS guide, watch whether orders convert and the Indicor deal closes.
AMETEK will publish its third-quarter 2026 results before the US market opens on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, with an investor call at 8:30 AM ET the same morning. The company announced the date in a press release dated October 15, 2026 (Berwyn, Pa.).
AMETEK makes electronic instruments and electromechanical parts — measurement equipment, aerospace sensors, precision motors — and reports in two segments: the Electronic Instruments Group (EIG) and the Electromechanical Group (EMG). Below is what its last quarter showed, according to our Q2 2026 analysis, and what will tell you whether the story is holding.
What Q2 2026 showed
- Sales of $2,044.4M, up 15.0%, of which 10 points were organic (growth from businesses AMETEK already owned a year earlier) and 5 points came from acquisitions.
- Adjusted diluted EPS of $2.09, up 17.4%; GAAP diluted EPS was $1.77, up 14.2%. "Adjusted" adds back amortization from past acquisitions plus one-time integration and financing costs.
- Orders of $2,284.0M, up 28.2% (25% organic), a book-to-bill of 1.12 — $1.12 of new work for every dollar shipped. Backlog hit a record $4,110.2M, up 14.8% since the end of 2025.
- Free cash flow of $451.7M, 111% of net income, up from 92% a year earlier.
- Margins split by segment: EMG's operating margin rose 290 basis points to 26.2% on 15% organic growth, while EIG's fell 170 basis points to 28.0%, which the 10-Q attributed to FARO and LKC integration costs and lower-margin acquired businesses.
What management guided
With the Q2 results, AMETEK guided:
| Guidance | Figure |
|---|---|
| Q3 2026 sales | up high single digits vs Q3 2025 |
| Q3 2026 adjusted diluted EPS | $2.08 – $2.10 |
| Q3 2026 GAAP diluted EPS | $1.85 – $1.87 |
| FY 2026 sales | up ~10% |
| FY 2026 adjusted diluted EPS | $8.20 – $8.30 (raised from $7.94 – $8.14) |
Note that the Q3 adjusted EPS range ($2.08–$2.10) sits right around Q2's $2.09: management did not guide for sequential growth, even with record backlog.
Three things to watch on November 3
1. Does the order surge convert, or fade? Q2's 25% organic order growth was more than double the 10% organic sales growth. Our Q2 report flagged two possible explanations besides genuine demand: customers ordering early to manage tariff risk, and a growing slice of multi-year work (remaining obligations beyond one year rose to $747.7M from $627.4M at year-end). If Q3 book-to-bill stays above 1.0 and organic sales growth moves above Q2's 10%, the backlog is turning into revenue. If orders drop back sharply toward sales, pull-forward becomes the likelier read.
2. Is "high single digits" conservative? Our Q2 arithmetic showed the full-year ~10% guide implies only about 7% second-half sales growth, versus 13.2% in the first half. A Q3 sales print at or above 10% growth, or another full-year raise above $8.20–$8.30, would confirm the guidance was cautious. A Q3 that merely lands inside $2.08–$2.10 would mean the backlog isn't yet lifting earnings.
3. Indicor, margins and the quality of EPS. In May AMETEK agreed to buy Indicor's instrumentation businesses for about $5.0B in cash (roughly $1.1B of annual sales), with closing expected in the second half of 2026 and up to $4.0B of term loans arranged for it. Watch whether the release reports the deal closed, how much debt was drawn, and any new bridge or financing fees: Q2's interest expense included a $10.0M one-off bridge-loan fee. Also check the tax rate — Q2's fell to 17.4% from 19.0%, worth about 3.5 cents of EPS — and whether EIG's margin recovers from 28.0% as FARO and LKC integration costs fade. If the deal has closed, expect reported margins to look weaker for a while, as acquired businesses diluted EIG's in Q2.
