Gilead Sciences (GILD) earnings preview: what to watch in Q3 2026
Published Oct 27, 2026
Gilead reports Q3 2026 on Oct 29: after a deal-driven $(8.45) Q2 loss, watch the $29.8–30.1B base-sales guidance, Biktarvy growth and the balance sheet.
Gilead Sciences reports its third-quarter 2026 results on Thursday, October 29, 2026, after the US market close, with a management webcast at 4:30 p.m. Eastern. That date comes from the company's own announcement of October 15 (gilead.com). Below is what the last quarter showed and what will tell you whether the story is holding.
What Q2 2026 showed
Our Q2 2026 analysis found two stories in one quarter:
| Metric | Q2 2026 | Q2 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | $7.80B (+10.2%) | $7.08B |
| Product sales excl. Veklury | $7.60B (+9.7%) | $6.93B |
| HIV product sales | $5.69B (+11.9%) | $5.09B |
| Diluted EPS (GAAP) | $(8.45) | $1.56 |
| Operating cash flow | $3.57B | $0.83B |
The loss was almost entirely accounting for deals, not a weaker drug business. When a company buys another company whose value lies in experimental, unapproved drugs, it has to expense the price at once. Gilead closed three such deals (Arcellx, Tubulis and Ouro Medicines) and booked $11.18 billion of acquired research expense, plus a $1.75 billion write-off after a Trodelvy lung-cancer trial was stopped. Those two items alone exceeded the quarter's revenue. Gilead puts the acquired-research hit at about $9.08 per share; adding it back to the adjusted loss of $(6.75) gives roughly $2.33 per share against $2.01 a year earlier, about +16% (our arithmetic, not a company figure).
Two soft spots: $156 million of revenue was a one-time catch-up from a past intellectual-property sale, so revenue grew about 8% without it; and Biktarvy's 7% growth was helped by wholesalers stocking up, which borrows sales from later quarters.
Management's guidance
On August 4, as our report quoted it, Gilead raised its full-year 2026 outlook for the base business and cut it for Veklury, its fading COVID-19 drug:
| Full-year 2026 | August 4 guidance | Previous (May 7) |
|---|---|---|
| Product sales | $30.1B – $30.4B | $30.0B – $30.4B |
| Product sales excl. Veklury | $29.8B – $30.1B | $29.4B – $29.8B |
| Veklury | ~$0.3B | ~$0.6B |
| GAAP diluted loss per share | $(3.75) – $(3.40) | $(3.25) – $(2.85) |
| Non-GAAP diluted loss per share | $(0.65) – $(0.30) | $(1.05) – $(0.65) |
The full-year loss guidance already includes the roughly $9.08 per share from the three acquisitions, so a full-year loss does not mean the rest of the year loses money.
What to watch in Q3
1. Whether the base-business guidance holds or moves again. The figure that matters is the $29.8–30.1 billion range for product sales excluding Veklury. Q2 delivered $7.60 billion, up 9.7%. If Gilead raises that range again, the HIV and liver growth is broadening; if it trims it, the Q2 stocking help and one-off revenue were doing more work than they looked.
2. Biktarvy once the stocking help fades. Biktarvy sold $3.77 billion in Q2 (+7%) on price, "favorable inventory dynamics" and patients switching from older Gilead pills (Genvoya fell 23%, Odefsey 20%). Growth in the mid-single digits without a stocking explanation would mean new patients are driving it. Alongside it, watch the new twice-yearly HIV-prevention shot Yeztugo, which sold $232 million in Q2 and $397 million in the first half.
3. Whether the charges stop, and what the balance sheet can still carry. The three deals closed in Q2, so a much smaller acquired-research line in Q3 is what the guidance implies; any new deal would show up there again. Cash and investments fell from $10.61 billion to $3.18 billion in six months, total debt is $26.2 billion, and $1.1 billion was drawn on a one-year term loan of up to $4.7 billion. Watch whether Gilead repays that loan from operating cash (it generated $3.57 billion in Q2) or draws more. In oncology, watch cell therapy, which fell 14% to $417 million; that decline is what the $7.0 billion Arcellx purchase is meant to reverse.
We'll publish our analysis of the Q3 report after it's filed; the Q2 baseline is in our full Q2 2026 report.
