Idexx Laboratories (IDXX) earnings preview: what to watch in Q3 2026
Published Oct 28, 2026
IDEXX reports Q3 2026 on November 2: watch whether recurring diagnostics hold near Q2's 10.3% organic growth and whether the $14.69–$14.94 EPS guide moves.
IDEXX Laboratories reports its third-quarter 2026 results (July to September) on Monday, November 2, 2026, before the US market opens, and holds a call for analysts at 8:30 a.m. ET. The date comes from the company's own scheduling announcement, as reprinted on Quantisnow's IDXX earnings page.
IDEXX sells diagnostic tests to veterinarians. Its business has two parts: analyzers that clinics buy once, and the test cartridges, slides and reference-lab work that clinics pay for again and again. The second part is most of the revenue and most of the profit, so it is what to watch on Monday.
What last quarter showed
Our Q2 2026 analysis, drawn from the 10-Q, found:
| Metric | Q2 2026 | Q2 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $1,216.6M | $1,109.5M | +9.7% (+9.0% organic) |
| CAG Diagnostics recurring revenue | $974.7M | $878.0M | +11.0% (+10.3% organic) |
| In-clinic consumables | $430.3M | $375.1M | +14.7% (+13.6% organic) |
| Instrument revenue | $47.2M | $58.6M | -19.5% |
| Gross margin | 64.0% | 62.6% | +1.4 pts |
| Operating margin | 35.0% | 33.6% | +1.4 pts |
| Diluted EPS | $4.27 | $3.63 | +17.6% |
"Organic" growth leaves out currency moves and acquisitions. Q2 had no acquisitions, and currency added 0.7 points.
In short, vets ran more tests on machines they already owned, and paid more per test. Instrument sales fell, but only because Q2 2025 included the launch wave of the inVue Dx analyzer. Selling fewer low-margin machines also helped gross margin. Two things weighed on the quarter: rapid assays grew only 1.1% organically, and general and administrative costs rose 18.4%, almost twice as fast as revenue.
What management guided to
In its August 4 release, IDEXX raised and narrowed its 2026 outlook:
- Revenue: $4,700M–$4,745M (was $4,675M–$4,760M)
- Organic revenue growth: 8.5%–9.7% (was 7.7%–9.7%)
- CAG Diagnostics recurring organic growth: 9.5%–10.7% (was 8.7%–10.7%)
- Operating margin: 32.3%–32.5% (was 32.1%–32.5%)
- Diluted EPS: $14.69–$14.94 (was $14.45–$14.90)
First-half revenue was $2,357.4M and diluted EPS was $7.74. That leaves about $2,343M–$2,388M of revenue and $6.95–$7.20 of EPS for the second half, which is lower than the first half on both counts. The margin guide points the same way. First-half operating margin was 33.4%, so a full year of about 32.4% means a second-half margin of roughly 31% (our arithmetic). That is consistent with the "incremental investments" the release flagged. A Q3 margin well below Q2's 35.0% would therefore be the plan playing out, not a surprise.
Three things to watch
1. Can recurring diagnostics stay near 10% organic? In Q2 it grew 10.3%, a little below the top of the raised 9.5%–10.7% range. If Q3 comes in near 10%, the full-year range holds. A drop toward 9% would suggest that Q2's strong consumables growth (+13.6% organic) was partly pricing and launch momentum that is now fading. Check the US and international split as well. In Q2, US recurring growth was 10% and international was 12% organic.
2. Is the installed base still growing about 11%? The 10-Q credits consumables volume partly to "11% growth in our installed base of premium instruments". Each analyzer placed becomes a steady buyer of tests. IDEXX placed over 1,600 inVue Dx units in Q2, which took that base past 9,000. With the launch year behind it, the question is whether placements stay high enough to keep the installed base growing at about 11%. That growth is the main support for consumables revenue. Instrument revenue itself will probably still show a weak year-on-year comparison.
3. Does the guidance move, and where are costs going? Q2 EPS got a $0.14 boost from tax deductions on employee stock compensation. On the company's comparable basis, EPS grew 15%, not 17.6%. Watch whether Q3 EPS growth relies on that kind of help or on buybacks: IDEXX repurchased $692.9M of stock in the first half. Also check whether G&A keeps rising faster than revenue. A further raise to the $14.69–$14.94 EPS range would show the second-half investments are smaller than budgeted. A cut, or a narrowing toward the low end, would point the other way. Our Q2 report also noted that part of the Water and LPD (livestock, poultry and dairy) strength was shipment timing that should not repeat.
We will publish our full Q3 2026 analysis after the results are filed. It will appear on the IDEXX company page.
