Gen Digital Q1 FY2027: EPS up 65% to $0.36, but a tax rate cut from 55% to 33% did most of it
Q1 · Fiscal year 2027 · Published by Pham Hop
Gen Digital's Q1 FY2027 revenue rose 6.3% to $1.336B (11% like-for-like after last year's extra week) and EPS rose 65% to $0.36, mostly because the tax rate fell to 33% from 55% while operating income was flat at $443M.
At a glance
- Revenue +6.3% reported, +11% like-for-like. The extra week in last year's quarter was worth $87 million of revenue; take it out (and add MoneyLion's pre-acquisition stub of $38 million) and the year-ago base drops to $1,208 million.
- Diluted EPS +65% to $0.36, but pretax income only +7.7%. The effective tax rate fell to 33% from 55%, which the 10-Q puts down to currency movements on tax balances, and interest expense fell $32 million.
- Trust-Based Solutions (identity protection plus MoneyLion) +26% to $490 million, while Cyber Safety (antivirus and privacy) fell 2.6% to $846 million because of the extra-week comparison.
EPS +65% but pretax income +7.7%: the tax rate fell to 33% from 55% on currency remeasurement of tax balances; operating income was flat at $443M
The reported figures look better than the underlying business: one-off gains, a prior-year charge that did not recur, a lower tax rate, buybacks or reserve releases did much of the work.
In this report
Gen Digital, the company behind Norton, Avast, LifeLock and the MoneyLion consumer-finance app, reported revenue of $1,336 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 (the 13 weeks to July 3, 2026), up 6.3% from $1,257 million. That headline understates the pace: the year-ago quarter had 14 weeks, not 13, and Gen did not yet own MoneyLion for its first 17 days. On a like-for-like basis Gen puts revenue growth at 11%. Profit grew much faster than revenue, but mostly because of a lower tax bill, not because the business earned more from operations: GAAP operating income was flat at $443 million.
Key figures
| Metric | Q1 FY2027 | Q1 FY2026 | YoY Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net revenue | $1,336M | $1,257M | +6.3% |
| Bookings | $1,284M | $1,202M | +6.8% |
| GAAP operating income | $443M | $446M | −0.7% |
| GAAP operating margin | 33.2% | 35.5% | −2.3 pts |
| Non-GAAP operating margin | 50.0% | 51.7% | −1.7 pts |
| GAAP net income | $215M | $135M | +59.3% |
| GAAP diluted EPS | $0.36 | $0.22 | +65% |
| Non-GAAP diluted EPS | $0.71 | $0.64 | +10.9% (+19% like-for-like) |
| Paid customers (period-end) | 81M | 76M | +5M |
| Operating cash flow | $434M | $409M | +6.1% |
The EPS change is Gen's own figure, calculated on unrounded earnings; the rounded $0.36 and $0.22 give about +64%. Non-GAAP figures come from Gen's Q1 earnings release (8-K Exhibit 99.1, August 6, 2026); the rest are from the 10-Q. Bookings are customer orders that will turn into revenue later. On Gen's like-for-like basis bookings grew 11% ($1,284M vs an adjusted $1,158M).
Takeaway: The 65% jump in EPS is a tax story. Operating income, the profit from running the business before interest and tax, was flat at $443 million, and pretax income rose only 7.7%. What lifted net income was a tax rate that fell from 55% to 33% on currency effects that can reverse, plus $32 million less interest. The underlying growth signal is the 11% like-for-like revenue increase, and the 19% like-for-like rise in adjusted EPS is the better guide to earnings power than the GAAP figure.
Two segments moving in opposite directions
| Segment | Q1 FY27 revenue | Q1 FY26 revenue | Change | Q1 FY27 segment margin | Q1 FY26 segment margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cyber Safety Platform | $846M | $869M | −2.6% | 61.3% | 61.0% |
| Trust-Based Solutions | $490M | $388M | +26.3% | 30.4% | 30.9% |
Segment margins are our arithmetic from the 10-Q's segment note (segment operating income of $519M and $149M this year, $530M and $120M last year, divided by segment revenue). Segment figures leave out acquired-intangible amortization, stock compensation, restructuring and litigation, which sit in a "Corporate" line of −$225 million (−$204 million a year ago).
Cyber Safety fell $23 million. The 10-Q says this was "primarily due to an impact of $56 million from the additional week in the first quarter of fiscal 2026, partially offset by growth across our Cyber Safety membership offerings." Add back the $56 million and, by our arithmetic, the segment grew about 4%. Its margin held at 61%.
Trust-Based Solutions grew $102 million despite losing $31 million to the extra-week comparison; the 10-Q credits "continued growth in our Financial Wellness offerings", which is MoneyLion. Its margin stayed near 30%, about half the security business's.
Growth is shifting toward partners. Partner revenue (retailers, telecoms, employee benefits and the MoneyLion loan marketplace) rose 34% to $273 million, while direct revenue from Gen's own sites and apps was flat at $1,063 million. Partners take a cut: cost of revenue rose $40 million, which the 10-Q attributes "primarily" to "a $35 million increase in partner revenue share mainly in Trust-Based Solutions."
What the headline numbers hide
- The tax rate did most of the work on EPS. Income tax fell to $108 million from $165 million even though pretax income rose. The 10-Q says the rate decreased "primarily due to foreign currency movements on the remeasurement of unrecognized tax benefits and deferred tax liabilities on intangible assets." That is an accounting effect of exchange rates on tax balances, not a lasting fall in Gen's tax burden; FY2026's full-year rate was 36%.
- Lower interest helped too. Interest expense fell to $124 million from $156 million. It still absorbs 28% of operating income, a reminder of the roughly $8.2 billion of debt.
- One-off costs went the other way. Restructuring rose to $32 million from $10 million, mainly $19 million more severance under a new Fiscal 2027 Plan, and litigation accruals were $24 million against $5 million. Both depress GAAP operating income and are excluded from the non-GAAP figures.
- The GAAP-to-adjusted gap is large and mostly recurring. Adjusted EPS of $0.71 is almost double GAAP $0.36. The biggest exclusions are $119 million of amortization of acquired intangibles ($0.20 a share) and $50 million of stock compensation ($0.08), both of which recur every quarter.
- The Instacash cost is growing. Gen sells MoneyLion's payday cash advances to an outside buyer at a discount. It sold $1,193 million of them (vs $823 million) and booked a $60 million loss on those sales (vs $36 million), recorded in sales and marketing.
- Cash conversion is good. Operating cash flow was $434 million, about twice net income, because amortization and stock compensation are non-cash. Free cash flow was $430 million.
- Buybacks shaved the share count. Diluted shares fell 3.4% to 603 million from 624 million. Gen bought back 4 million shares for $100 million and paid $81 million in dividends; $1,994 million of buyback authorization remains. A 3.4% smaller share count accounts for roughly 3–4 points of EPS growth on its own.
On balance the quarter is flattered: EPS rose 65% while pretax income rose 7.7%, with the fall in the tax rate from 55% to 33% doing most of the work.
Did last time's read hold up?
Our FY2026 annual report flagged three things to watch: the Trust-Based Solutions margin, the cost of selling Instacash advances, and the Columbia University patent case. The Trust-Based margin held at about 30%, so the MoneyLion-driven reset has not deepened. The Instacash loss grew faster than volume: up 67% to $60 million from $36 million, against a 45% rise in advances sold. That is the trend to keep an eye on. On Columbia, the 10-Q puts the probable loss at about $256 million, already accrued, after the appeals court sent the damages award back to the trial court, and still says a larger loss is reasonably possible but can't be estimated.
Outlook
Gen raised its fiscal 2027 guidance (non-GAAP) on August 6, 2026:
| Guidance (non-GAAP) | New | Previous (May 7, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| FY2027 revenue | $5,375–5,475M | $5,325–5,425M |
| FY2027 EPS | $2.87–2.97 | $2.85–2.95 |
| Q2 FY2027 revenue | $1,325–1,350M | — |
| Q2 FY2027 EPS | $0.71–0.73 | — |
The Q2 guide implies revenue roughly flat to slightly up from Q1's $1,336 million. Because Q2 has no calendar distortion and MoneyLion was owned for all of the year-ago quarter, Q2 will be the first clean year-on-year comparison since the acquisition: against $1,220 million a year earlier, the guide's midpoint ($1,337.5 million) implies about 10% growth.
Our read: the security franchise grows in the low single digits with very high margins, and MoneyLion supplies the growth at about half the margin. The things to watch next quarter are whether the tax rate drifts back up toward the mid-30s (which would cut into GAAP EPS growth), whether Trust-Based margins stay near 30% as partner revenue share rises, and whether the Instacash sale losses keep growing faster than the volume of advances sold, as they did this quarter.
