KLA Corporation fiscal Q1 2027: revenue up 29% to $4.14B, operating margin widens to 45%
Q1 · Fiscal year 2027 · Published by Pham Hop
KLA Corporation's fiscal Q1 2027 revenue rose 28.9% to $4.14B and diluted EPS 38.8% to $1.18 as AI-driven process-control demand outran a 10.7% rise in operating costs; it guides December-quarter revenue to $4.7B ± $200M.
At a glance
- Revenue +28.9% to $4.14B, against 11.7% growth for the whole of fiscal 2026. Growth more than doubled in pace, and the core inspection business (91% of sales) grew 29.5%.
- Operating margin 45.0%, up 3.3 points from 41.7%. Costs of running the business (R&D and overheads) rose 10.7% while revenue rose 28.9%, so most of the extra sales dropped through to profit.
- December-quarter guidance of $4.7B ± $200M, another 13.6% above this quarter at the midpoint, with GAAP EPS guided to $1.41 ± $0.11.
EPS +38.8% tracks pre-tax income +39.3%; no one-offs in either year, tax rate slightly higher, share count down only 1%, cash flow ~99% of net income
The reported figures match the underlying business: no material one-offs, and profit growth came from operations.
In this report
KLA makes the inspection and measurement tools chipmakers use to catch defects while they manufacture chips, a category the industry calls "process control." Its fiscal year runs to June 30, so the quarter that ended September 30, 2026 is the first quarter of fiscal 2027. KLA released the results on October 28, 2026 in an earnings release filed with the SEC (Form 8-K, Exhibit 99.1). The full quarterly report (10-Q) has not been filed yet, so this analysis is written from the release. The release does not include the regional split (including China), customer concentration or management's discussion of what drove each line; those will come with the 10-Q.
Revenue was $4.14 billion, up 28.9% from $3.21 billion a year earlier and up 13.1% from the June quarter. Net income rose 38.1% to $1.55 billion and diluted earnings per share (EPS) rose 38.8% to $1.18. All three beat the midpoint of the guidance KLA gave in July.
The numbers
| Metric | Q1 FY2027 (Jul–Sep 2026) | Q1 FY2026 (Jul–Sep 2025) | YoY change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | $4,136.0M | $3,209.7M | +28.9% |
| — Product revenue | $3,285.5M | $2,465.0M | +33.3% |
| — Service revenue | $850.5M | $744.7M | +14.2% |
| Gross margin | 61.9% | 61.3% | +0.6 pt |
| Operating margin (computed) | 45.0% | 41.7% | +3.3 pt |
| Net income | $1,548.6M | $1,121.0M | +38.1% |
| Diluted EPS (GAAP) | $1.18 | $0.85 | +38.8% |
| Diluted EPS (non-GAAP) | $1.22 | $0.88 | +38.6% |
| Operating cash flow | $1,530.9M | $1,161.6M | +31.8% |
| Free cash flow | $1,336.2M | $1,065.7M | +25.4% |
How these were worked out: gross margin is the share of revenue left after the direct cost of building and servicing the tools ($2,558.2M of $4,136.0M this quarter). KLA's income statement does not show an operating income line, so operating margin, the share of revenue left after running the whole business and before interest and tax, is computed here as revenue minus cost of revenues, R&D and selling, general and administrative costs: $1,861.7M this quarter versus $1,337.2M a year ago, up 39.2%. Per-share figures for both years reflect the ten-for-one stock split of June 11, 2026, so the comparison is like for like.
Where the growth came from
KLA reports three business segments:
| Segment | Q1 FY2027 | Q1 FY2026 | YoY | vs June quarter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Semiconductor Process Control | $3,754.3M | $2,899.4M | +29.5% | +15.3% |
| Specialty Semiconductor Process | $139.5M | $119.8M | +16.5% | −12.7% |
| PCB and Component Inspection | $242.2M | $189.5M | +27.8% | +0.4% |
Semiconductor Process Control, the core inspection and measurement business, did almost all of the work. It added $855M of the $926M year-on-year revenue increase and $497M of the $478M rise from the June quarter, because the other two segments together were slightly down from June. The CEO credits AI-related investment: "increases in leading-edge designs across foundry and logic, device size and value, memory complexity and performance requirements, and the importance of advanced packaging." (Foundry/logic means contract chipmakers and processor makers. Advanced packaging is the step where several chips are assembled into one component, which AI accelerators depend on.)
Product sales (new tools) grew 33.3%, much faster than service revenue (support contracts and upgrades on tools already installed), which grew 14.2%. Service fell to 20.6% of revenue from 23.2%. That is what a strong equipment upswing looks like, but it also means a larger part of the quarter came from the cyclical side of the business rather than from recurring contracts.
Specialty Semiconductor Process (deposition and etch tools for niche chip types) grew 16.5% from a weak year-ago base but fell 12.7% from the June quarter. This was the segment where China export restrictions showed up most in fiscal 2026; the release does not say why it dipped this quarter.
The release gives no regional figures, so it is not yet possible to say whether China's share of revenue kept shrinking (it was 29.8% in fiscal 2026, down from 33.3%). That is the first thing to check when the 10-Q arrives.
Margins: operating leverage, not price
Gross margin rose 0.6 points to 61.9%, above the 61.6% midpoint KLA guided in July and well inside the ±1.0-point range. The release does not break down why, so the effect of the higher DRAM chip prices KLA warned about in its 10-K cannot be separated from the benefit of higher volume. On the totals, the warning has not yet shown up: gross margin is higher than both a year ago and the June quarter (61.4%).
The bigger change is below gross profit. R&D rose 9.6% to $395.1M and selling, general and administrative costs rose 12.1% to $301.5M, against 28.9% revenue growth. R&D fell to 9.6% of revenue from 11.2%. That is where most of the 3.3-point operating margin gain comes from: KLA's cost base is growing at roughly a third of the pace of its sales.
Takeaway: KLA's growth more than doubled in pace, from 11.7% for fiscal 2026 to 28.9% this quarter, and the profit gain comes from operations. Pre-tax income rose 39.3% and EPS 38.8%, with a slightly higher tax rate and only a 1% lower share count, and costs grew at roughly a third of the pace of revenue. The open question is concentration: one segment produced all of the growth from June, and the regional and customer split that would show where it came from is not in the release.
What the headline numbers hide
- Cash conversion is good. Operating cash flow was $1,530.9M against net income of $1,548.6M, about 99%. Free cash flow (operating cash flow minus capital spending) was $1,336.2M, up 25.4%. It grew less than profit because capital spending doubled to $194.8M from $95.9M; the release does not say what it was spent on.
- Inventory is building ahead of sales. Inventories rose $441.9M in the quarter, or 12.1%, to $4,090.4M. That is in line with the 13.1% sequential revenue increase and with the 13.6% further increase guided for December, and it fits the 10-K's note that KLA was buying scarce DRAM chips at higher prices. It is worth watching if the December guide is missed, but it is not out of step yet.
- Receivables eased. In fiscal 2026 receivables grew 28%, more than twice as fast as revenue. This quarter they rose 6.3% to $3,072.1M while revenue rose 13.1% from June, so the gap did not widen.
- Deferred revenue is still not building. Deferred system and service revenue (money billed for tools and services not yet counted as revenue) fell 3.8% in the quarter, to $1,707.8M from $1,775.1M. Deferred system revenue alone fell $89.9M. So the revenue jump came from shipments, not from a growing pile of committed orders on the balance sheet. That isn't a backlog figure, but it doesn't signal that customers are paying further ahead either.
- The GAAP vs adjusted gap is small and familiar. Non-GAAP EPS of $1.22 is $0.04 above GAAP. The difference is $43.0M of acquisition-related charges (mainly amortization of intangible assets from past acquisitions; $14.6M less after tax), $5.8M of discrete tax items, and a new item: $20.2M of "Pillar Two undertaxed profits rule taxes," a global minimum-tax charge that KLA expects to reverse if a proposed safe harbour for US-parented groups is adopted. It is a real cash tax today, so the GAAP figure is the safer one to use.
- EPS growth came from operations. Pre-tax income rose 39.3%, nearly the same as EPS. The effective tax rate (the share of pre-tax profit paid in tax) rose to 15.1% from 14.4%, which held back growth a little. Other income fell to $30.3M from $43.4M, and interest expense fell slightly, to $67.9M from $71.1M. The diluted share count fell 1.0% despite $935.8M of buybacks, so buybacks added less than one point to EPS growth (net income +38.1%, EPS +38.8%).
On balance the quarter is clean: EPS rose 38.8% and pre-tax income 39.3%, there was no material one-off in either year, and a slightly higher tax rate was a small drag rather than a boost.
Cash returned to shareholders
KLA spent $935.8M on share repurchases and $305.1M on dividends, $1,240.9M in total, or 93% of the quarter's free cash flow. That is up from $799.1M a year ago. A further $238.7M went on tax withholding for vested employee share awards. Cash and marketable securities ended the quarter at $4.74 billion against $5.72 billion of long-term debt.
Did last time's read hold up?
Our fiscal 2026 report concluded that "the balance of evidence points to slower growth than FY2026's 11.7% unless leading-edge spending accelerates further." Leading-edge spending did accelerate, and growth came in at 28.9%, so the base case was wrong on the pace. Two of the three pressures it named have not yet appeared in the numbers. Gross margin rose despite the DRAM cost warning, and receivables stopped outrunning sales. The third point, that deferred revenue was not building, still holds: it fell 3.8% this quarter. The preview asked whether revenue would land in the top half of the $3.8–4.2B range. At $4.14B it did, and GAAP EPS of $1.18 beat the $1.14 midpoint.
Outlook
For the December quarter (fiscal Q2 2027), KLA guides:
| Guidance item | Q2 FY2027 guide | Q1 FY2027 actual |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $4.7B ± $200M | $4.14B |
| GAAP gross margin | 61.8% ± 1.0 pt | 61.9% |
| Non-GAAP gross margin | 62.5% ± 1.0 pt | 62.7% |
| GAAP diluted EPS | $1.41 ± $0.11 | $1.18 |
| Non-GAAP diluted EPS | $1.44 ± $0.11 | $1.22 |
Even the low end of the revenue range ($4.5B) would be 8.8% above this quarter, and the midpoint EPS is 19.5% higher. Gross margin is guided roughly flat, which suggests management expects volume to keep offsetting component costs, but not to widen margins further. The CEO describes the current period as "the accelerated growth we expected for the second half of calendar 2026."
Our read: the profit trajectory into December is well supported, because KLA's operating costs are growing much more slowly than its sales. The risk is that this is an upswing led by a few very large customers' capital plans. In fiscal 2026 one customer, TSMC, supplied about 19% of revenue, and deferred revenue isn't rising alongside shipments, so there is little visible cushion if those plans pause. Three things to check in the 10-Q: China's share of revenue, whether the largest customer's share rose further, and what management says drove the gross margin and the doubling of capital spending.
