AT&T fiber gains; Thermo Fisher, Elevance file – Market Brief, Oct 21, 2026
Published Oct 21, 2026
AT&T reported third-quarter results with growth in fiber internet customers, while Thermo Fisher, Elevance Health, CME Group and Chubb filed earnings.
Takeaway: A heavy day of quarterly filings ran through the U.S. market, led by AT&T, whose fiber broadband business drew attention in its third-quarter report. Thermo Fisher Scientific, Elevance Health, CME Group, Northern Trust, Chubb and Philip Morris International also filed results with the SEC. Away from company news, fresh U.S. government data showed consumer prices up 0.6% in September and unemployment at 4.2%, and two banking chief executives weighed in publicly on the economics of data centers.
AT&T reports third quarter, points to fiber subscriber growth
AT&T filed an 8-K with the SEC containing its results of operations for the quarter. A MarketWatch report on the same results said the company's fiber internet business was the standout, with a large number of new internet subscribers added, and framed it against concerns about competition from SpaceX.
Why it matters. Broadband subscriber additions are one of the clearest signs of whether a telecom company is winning customers rather than just raising prices. The site's last published figures for AT&T were Q2 2026 revenue of $31.6B (+2.3%) and EPS of $0.66 (+6.5%); the new quarter's detail sits in the filing itself.

Healthcare and lab companies file quarterly results
Thermo Fisher Scientific and Elevance Health each filed 8-K reports covering results of operations and financial condition. Labcorp Holdings filed an 8-K under Regulation FD, the rule covering disclosures a company makes to the public outside of a formal earnings item.
Why it matters. These three cover health insurance, lab testing and scientific instruments, so together they may give a read on both medical cost trends and research spending. The site's latest figures were Thermo Fisher Q2 2026 revenue $12.0B (+10.5%), Elevance Q2 2026 revenue $50.5B (+1.4%), and Labcorp Q2 2026 revenue $3.7B (+5.8%).

CME Group, Northern Trust and Chubb post results
CME Group and Northern Trust filed 8-K reports with results of operations; Northern Trust's filing also included a Regulation FD disclosure. Chubb filed its own results 8-K late on Oct 20.
Why it matters. An exchange operator, a custody bank and a large insurer earn money in different ways — trading volumes, client assets and interest, and premiums — so reading them side by side may show where financial activity is holding up. Site figures to date: CME Q2 2026 revenue $1.7B (+0.8%), Northern Trust Q2 2026 net interest income $676M (+10.6%), Chubb Q2 2026 revenue $15.8B (+6.6%).

U.S. data: prices up 0.6% in September, unemployment 4.2%
The Bureau of Labor Statistics' latest indicators page listed a 0.6% rise in the Consumer Price Index for September 2026, an unemployment rate of 4.2%, payroll employment up 29,000 (preliminary) and average hourly earnings up $0.05 (preliminary).
Why it matters. The CPI measures what households pay for a basket of goods and services; payrolls count jobs added. A monthly price rise alongside a modest jobs gain may complicate the trade-off policymakers face between inflation and employment, though these figures alone do not settle it.

BlackRock and HSBC chiefs differ on data-center risks
BlackRock chief executive Larry Fink said opposition to building data centers would push inflation higher, according to MarketWatch. Separately, CNBC reported HSBC's chief executive warning that the artificial-intelligence boom does not make every data center a sound investment.
Why it matters. Data centers are the warehouses of computers behind AI services, and they need large amounts of land, power and capital. The two comments show executives disagreeing on whether the constraint is local resistance or the quality of individual projects, which may matter for how lenders and investors price this spending.

SEC signs cooperation deal with France's AMF and meets Japan's FSA
The SEC announced a memorandum of understanding with France's Autorité des Marchés Financiers to make consultation and information-sharing easier in supervising investment advisers and investment service providers. The SEC also said it held its Autumn Financial Regulatory Dialogue with Japan's Financial Services Agency in Tokyo on Oct 19, 2026.
Why it matters. A memorandum of understanding is an agreement to cooperate rather than a binding law. For firms managing money across borders, closer information-sharing between regulators could mean more consistent oversight of their operations in each country.
